Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum - October 13th
Youth Presentation 2:15-3:30pm (following Cockpit Demos)
Evening program, Retrospective Program with guest panel members and roundtable discussions, 6:30-9:30pm
In October, 1962, the United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in a showdown over the placement of Russian offensive nuclear weapons in its client state of Cuba. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Missile Crisis, often regarded as the most dangerous incident of the Cold War, the Rocky Mountain councils of the Navy League, Colorado Aviation Historical Society, and Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum are presenting The “Missile Crisis Retrospective” seminar. It will bring together people who participated in the significant events of the Missile Crisis to discuss their role in the encounter that nearly resulted in nuclear war.
Our presentation will establish the context of the Crisis and highlight the stories of Colorado’s involvement in this historic event. Lowry AFB was the home of a Titan I missile wing, photo intel school, and a dispersal site for Strategic Air Command bombers. The crisis that brought America’s military to its highest state of readiness prepared to respond to Soviet missiles launched at the heart of the American continent.
The discussion portion will bring together a panel of “Crisis” veterans from our community who had a direct involvement in America’s defense-on active duty in the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, or working in Colorado’s major defense industries. They have compelling stories which convey the sense of tension felt throughout the country in October, 1962. Through these personal narratives, we hope our audience will gain an appreciation for the pride, professionalism, and commitment displayed by members of our armed forces in the support of national policy during this historic period.
